When I first saw the ad for the Nature Coast 12W6GT amplifier show below, I was unfamiliar with both the tube and the builder, but happy to see a professionally produced amplifier built around a new-to-me TV tube. I like unusual builds using tubes or circuits that are a bit out of the well-known and over-discovered, and I’m always on the lookout. I’ve also learned to really love the TV tube types, having owned 8 or 10 different amps built around TV tube topologies. These tubes are seriously overlooked by the audio world. So when I saw this clean looking, professional build on a TV tube I haven’t heard yet, and advertised as having a very “45-like magic”, it certainly got my attention. The type 45 tube in a push pull configuration is a force of nature; and a low cost, “exotic” 45-like push pull amp making 6 watts is definitely of interest to me.

Reaching out to Scott at Nature Coast Electronics I learned that the circuit was his own design, printed onto custom circuit boards, and that the amp could also run 6V6 tubes with some very minor changes underneath. Since my wife and I were preparing at that time to possibly move to South Korea for a few years for her job, I was interested in finding a capable but unusual small-form-factor tube amp to power a set of folding open baffles in what I knew would be a crowded Seoul apartment. Just in case I had the opportunity to mingle with the Seoul hifi crowd, I wanted something a little unexpected and understated; something with some panache but not one of the usual triode suspects. And light enough to lug around on the Seoul subway. With a built-in volume control and 6 watts per channel, the Nature Coast 12W6GT was far enough off the radar but still capable of being a one-stop solution for a small space on an efficient driver, and I felt like this could be just the ticket.

The 12W6 turns out to be one of the more common TV tubes. A beam pentode, it was used pretty extensively as vertical stabilizers in 50s and 60s black and white TV sets, and of course was never intended for audio. In this cool little amplifier, Nature Coast has utilized a quad of them triode-strapped to produce 6 watts of extremely nice push pull tube audio power. Driven by either the 6EJ7, 6J51P or the EF184, there is room for tailoring the amp’s character. In play this amp is very sweet and full sounding, with a relaxed but toe tapping presence. It’s not boring or slow in any way, and has some of the pentode-like driven sound, but it resonates just a little deeper in this amp and I think that is the 45-like character that was described. Comparisons to triodes aside, this amp (and the 12W6) has a sound that stands on its own merits. It’s gorgeous.

But that’s not all. After a few small user-enabled changes under the hood, this amplifier is also fully compatible with the 6V6 (or 12V6), and once transformed this is a subtly different amplifier. Like having two in one. The European model 6V6 I have on hand (and enjoy so much in my Alpa monoblocks) are so sweet sounding in the Nature Coast amplifier. There is depth, character and a crisp sense of attention that really makes me wonder about needing more than this. The 6V6 can have an incredibly involving sound, and in this amp it shines bright!

The niche tube amp world has evolved quite a bit in the 20+ years that I’ve been playing around with this gear. But most of the market is still focused on the same old well known and well discovered tube types. Knowing that there are still so many old stock tubes like the 12W6GT waiting to be “discovered” and brought out into the brighter light, I’m always excited to see a build like this. And a high quality one at that. An underappreciated tube type given some love and attention, and built into a platform that is equipped to show its potential. The Nature Coast 12W6GT sounds good in all of the ways that matter on the hifi checklist, but more than that it has some soul, and that is something a little rarer. So far, this is the one and only 12W6 amplifier I have ever seen for sale. I hope that changes soon. Builders take note: this one could be a good alternative to EL-84, 6V6, and more. Super highly recommended!

I always love the mesh plate tubes, for whatever reason. They must sound better, right? These 6EJ7 are beautiful little jewels.

The 12W6GT come in a lot of brands but mostly seem to be the same or very similar internal construction. I’ve tried both RCA and GE tubes in this amp and both sounded great (and essentially the same).

Built in volume control right up front, here with an "aftermarket" vintage chicken head knob.

I’m always happy to see these connections on the back rather than the top plate. It makes for a much cleaner appearance.

The big Psvane Reference 845 monos do overshadow the 12W6GT in most every way (except convenience and portability), but it's a fun back and forth.

The Alpa 300B are seriously fine sounding amplifiers, and the 12W6 provides a leaner and more punchy alternative.
